Finally, a new theme
Like the title says: a new theme. It’s taken me absolutely ages to do anything with this site. I started out with a great new design - scrapped it - then started another. After many iterations of the design-scrap loop, just recently I decided to plant myself in front of the computer until I got something I liked. I might even use those old semi-finished themes later too.
This one I really like, and hopefully it will be a keeper for a while. Though I don’t want it to last as long as the previous one did (over a year?).
Things I learned
With creating anything new, be it a button or a full-scale site, a designer/web developer always learns something new. While making this brand-spankin’ new theme I learned a couple more things about CSS.
First off I sharpened my skills at class/ID naming and worked on my structure and neatness of the CSS code. It makes it easier to read later, and if someone happens to want to steal (or hopefully just look) my hard work, then it will be easier for them to read too.
Also in the matter of CSS, I learned that to float div columns (such as this very one right here) next to other ones, I only need to use float:left;. I don’t need float:right; at all it seems. During the layout-making process I contemplated a three-column design for extra stuff on the right of this column so I needed a way to float stuff without the design exploding. I looked it up and discovered that you can use float:left; instead of fumbling around with the ‘right’ one.
xHTML-wise I didn’t learn much, but I did challenge myself to write strict instead of transitional this time.
Still a bit incomplete
Well, it’s actually a lot incomplete right now. I wanted to get this stupid thing up for the longest time! I’m still working on it… You may find a lot of things are broken / non-existent.
